Diabetes is a Disease - Are We in Denial?

According to the American Diabetes Association , Diabetes is a disease and it’s rampant.  I was reading an article on the American Diabetes Association site and they say the statistics are 23.6 million children and adults (7.8%) just in the United States population have diabetes.  The article goes further to state that there are approximately 5.7 people who are unaware they have diabetes.

Many of the symptoms go unnoticed as one or two symptoms may seem harmless enough by themselves.

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight lossHead in the Sand
  • Increased fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Blurry vision

So what do you do to find out where you stand?  Well, first off,
you don’t hide your head in the sand.

Most health care providers will run a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Either test can be used to diagnose pre-diabetes or diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends the FPG because it is easier, faster, and less expensive to perform.

Is diabetes hereditary?  Most researchers will tell you that some families are pre-disposed for the disease, but in other cases, it just pops up.  For me, my great-grandmother was diabetic, my mother is hypoglycemic, my oldest sister is severely diabetic, my next older sister was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago and I am borderline hypoglycemic.

So what do you do?  See your health care provider and get checked regularly.  Beyond regular check-ups, according to the American Diabetes Association:

Along with exercise and medications, nutrition is important for good diabetes control. By eating well-balanced meals in the correct amounts, you can learn to thrive with diabetes.

The worst thing we can do as a society is to IGNORE or DENY the existence and seriousness.  No matter what the stage, Diabetes is a serious condition.  I watch my oldest sister give herself insulin injections daily.  For her, the Insulin injections have their on side-effects.  I don’t want to be there, I don’t like her being there.  I don’t want anyone being there.

There are also so many complications that can arise from Diabetes, so get yourself checked, get your exercise, eat a healthy diet (sometimes a tough thing to do in our ‘on the run’ society).  Stay on top of your health.  It requires a lifestyle change for many of us, but do it for YOU and do it for your loved ones.

From the Desk of Jana Mitcham

………. "Are our products gluten free?" Why would someone ask that question? If you were the one in 133 Americans who suffers from gluten intolerance, you would understand the need for good health supplements that are free of gluten. Gluten intolerance can cause symptoms of diarrhea, weight loss and malnutrition. It can also cause mild weakness, bone pain, and bloating. Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye.

There are mixed opinions on oats – although newer research is presenting that oats do not represent a risk. For those who are gluten intolerant, the health of the bowel is very important; thus VitaFiber would be a good colon health supplement for them. The ability to completely digest their foods is also important; thus Vi-Gest would be helpful. Add VitaOne, Coral Calcium+ and LimuPlus for a well-rounded health regimen.

At Vitamark, we have created a line of products suitable for those with gluten intolerance – all of our products except VitaGreens (which contains young wheat and barley plant juices) are gluten or wheat/barley/rye free. For those who are extremely sensitive, it is important to note that our Appetizer Diet contains ingredients that are processed in a facility where products containing gluten are also produced so there is a slight chance that there could be some gluten residue. Although it is not likely, we do want to mention this.

Education is one of the keys to good health. If you know someone who is looking for a gluten-free line of nutritional supplements, share this information with them.
